Ontology

My ontological position is presentist, Humean, structural nominalist atomism and have an instrumentalist position for casual communication:

  • Reality consists of many indivisible units called “simples” with no inherent properties and they are distinguished only by their relation in the arrangement (relational atomism)
  • Everything we identify and label is just a different arrangement of simples (nominalist atomism)
  • There are no real causal connections so causal language is just a useful description of how the present is arranged (Humeanism)
  • The past and future are useful constructs but only the present truly is, so there is no persistence, only sequences of similar configurations (presentism + momentarism)
  • I may say “x caused y” without believing causality exists, simply to communicate more clearly (instrumentalism)
